Barrandov Studio has opened two new modern stages, bringing the total number of stages to 18

On June 25th, 2026, Barrandov Studio officially opened two new sound stages. A festive ribbon-cutting brunch celebrated the completion of a multi-year investment project, introducing Stages 11 and 12 to the studio complex.  “The total cost of this investment reached CZK 210 million [EUR 8.4 million]. Following previous investments – including the new costume and props department building, the renovation of the former film laboratories building, and the construction of a new workshop facility - this is the next planned step in the development of the entire Barrandov complex,” said Tichý.

Each of these new soundproof stages offers over 1,200 m² of shooting space and a clear height of 12.3 metres - ample room for large-scale sets and demanding shoots. Steel walkways run around the entire perimeter, served by a freight lift with a load capacity of 2,000 kg, allowing technical equipment to be raised to working heights effortlessly. The concrete floor can handle loads of up to 1,000 kg/m², accommodating even the heaviest set constructions and scenic builds. The stages are equipped with extraction systems designed for practical smoke effects, pyrotechnics, and open fireplaces, while the HVAC system guarantees rapid air exchange. The complex also features a modern 1,000 m² auxiliary facility with fully air-conditioned hair and make-up rooms, costume rooms, catering areas, and production offices. Ample parking spaces and charging points for electric vehicles are also provided.

"Demand for studio infrastructure at Barrandov remains as high as ever. Even before construction was finished, filmmakers were expressing interest in the new stages. The first tenants will move into the stages in July, accommodating both a commercial project and a major foreign drama series - an international production that will nevertheless resonate strongly with Czech audiences," added Tichý.

What’s currently on the slate at Barrandov?

This year, Barrandov hosted the production of Netflix’s period drama series The Age of Innocence, starring Ben Radcliffe, Kristine Froseth, and Margo Martindale. The series filmed at Barrandov for several months, with Stillking Films acting as the local line production company. Other recent productions include the third season of the German Netflix series The Empress (with local physical production handled by MIA Film), the British feature film The Face of Horror, and the German series Two Murder in the Forest (line produced by Wilma Film). A year ago, Barrandov hosted the long-awaited US series Blade Runner 2099 (serviced by Film United).

Barrandov Studios' Future Plans

The opening of the new stages is part of the studio’s broader investment strategy. The next planned phase is the refurbishment of the “New Halls” - Stages 5, 6, and 7. To execute this refurbishment without significantly disrupting ongoing operations, expanding capacity in advance was essential. The new Stages 11 and 12 provide precisely this operational buffer.

Over the last decade alone, Barrandov Studio a.s., supported by its majority shareholder Moravia Steel a.s., has invested more than CZK 1 billion [EUR 40 million] in the complex. Further major investments are planned in the coming years. The reconstruction of the three “New Halls”, which date back to World War II, alone will cost around CZK 180 million [EUR 7.2 million],” Tichý noted.

With the opening of Stages 11 and 12, Barrandov Studio now offers a total of eighteen stages: fourteen at the main Barrandov complex and an additional four at the Hostivař facility. The total stage footprint at the main Barrandov site covers 10,900 m². The studio also boasts an extensive 160,000 m² backlot ideal for set builds, which includes a standing medieval town set and a large Paris street set available for hire. Auxiliary and production support facilities cover an additional 60,000 m². Meanwhile, the Hostivař site contributes another 2,176 m² of production and stage space.
