Zach Cregger's Resident Evil Was Filmed in the Czech Republic

The film is directed by Zach Cregger, the filmmaker behind horror films Weapons (2025) and Barbarian (2022). For Resident Evil, he also co-wrote the screenplay with Shay Hatten, known for his work on three John Wick films, including the latest spin-off Ballerina, which was also filmed in the Czech Republic.

Constantin Film is producing and co-financing the film. Constantin’s Robert Kulzer, Vertigo Entertainment’s Roy Lee (Barbarian, Minecraft) and Miri Yoon (Woman of the Hour, Weapons) and PlayStation Productions are also producing.

Filming took place mainly in Prague from October 2025 to January 2026. Sony Pictures is releasing the film in theaters on September 18, 2026. Czech service company Stillking Films managed production, while location scouting was led by Robert Mehrle and his team at Lokační.

Executive Producer Robert Bernacchi says: "RESIDENT EVIL was my 4th production in Prague spanning more than 25 years. Over this period of time, I have seen the film and TV industry flourish and grow. The infrastructure has improved significantly both in terms of skilled labor and studio space/vendors as well as the city itself, with a vast larger choice of hotels and restaurants to choose from. There was no tax incentive 25 years ago and this aspect too has been exciting to watch as it was implemented and improved over the years. I highly recommend shooting in Prague."

Based on Capcom’s hugely popular horror video games, the film stars Austin Abrams, who previously worked with Cregger on Weapons. Cinematography is by Dariusz Wolski, a Polish-born director of photography known for numerous acclaimed titles, including Ridley Scott’s recent films Napoleon, House of Gucci, and The Last Duel.

The Resident Evil films have grossed a total of $1.2 billion, making it one of the most successful video game-based film franchises.

Several other major international projects were being filmed in the Czech Republic. Netflix  produced the third season of the German series The Empress (by Sommerhause Filmproduktion GmbH, serviced by Czech company MIA Film Production). The series The Age of Innocence was serviced by Stillking Films, as was Resident Evil. Apple Studios also  filmed another season of Foundation, with production expected to spend nearly CZK 2 billion in the country. Czech company Milk and Honey Production has long provided services for Foundation.
